Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has passed away at the age of 82 in a clinic in London, United Kingdom.

The news of his death was shared on Sunday by his former spokesperson, Garba Shehu, via a post on X (formerly Twitter).

“The family of the former president has confirmed the passing of Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a London clinic. May Allah grant him Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin,” Shehu wrote.

According to family sources, Buhari had been battling an undisclosed illness and was recently discharged from the intensive care unit before his health deteriorated again.

He reportedly became unwell during a routine medical check-up abroad and had remained under medical observation in the weeks leading to his death. Although specific details of his condition were not made public, he was initially thought to be recovering before his situation worsened.

Buhari, a retired major general, was a prominent figure in Nigeria’s political landscape. He first led the country as a military head of state from 1983 to 1985 and later returned to power as a democratically elected president in 2015.

His civilian presidency, which lasted until 2023, was marked by a strong anti-corruption drive, economic reforms, and persistent efforts to combat national insecurity.

Funeral details are expected to be released soon, as condolences continue to pour in from across the nation.
