The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 24-year-old woman, Somtochukwu Nwafor, in connection with the brutal murder and dismemberment of a pregnant nurse in Ogbunike, located in the Oyi Local Government Area of the state.

Nwafor was apprehended on July 25, 2025, with the help of residents from Umueri village in Ogbunike, following the discovery of the victim’s mutilated body in a soakaway pit. The horrific incident sparked widespread fear and condemnation within the community.

In a statement released on Wednesday via Facebook, Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, revealed that the suspect admitted during interrogation to being the girlfriend of the main suspect, Chiemerie Elobisi, who remains at large. She also confessed to being called in after the murder to help clean up the crime scene and disclosed that the victim’s body parts were sold to local native doctors allegedly involved in ritual activities.

According to the police, preliminary findings suggest that the victim, a qualified nurse, was lured to the suspect’s residence under the pretense of providing medical assistance before being killed.

Based on Nwafor’s confession, detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) raided a shrine on July 29, 2025. The shrine belonged to a native doctor identified as Nwafor Chibunna Ofornwatadile from Itima Amawa Village in Ogbunike, where suspected human remains were discovered wrapped in cellophane bags.

Authorities have since intensified efforts to apprehend the prime suspect, Elobisi, along with others believed to be involved in the crime, including those who allegedly purchased the body parts.

Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the incident, labeling it as “barbaric, criminal, and a gross violation of human dignity.” He reassured the public that a thorough investigation is underway and urged anyone with helpful information to assist the police, assuring that all informants’ identities will remain confidential.
