A pregnant woman was brutally murdered in Ilorin, Kwara State, in a suspected ritual killing. Police have arrested her husband’s younger brother as investigations continue.

The Temidire Zone 4 community in Egbejila, Ilorin, Kwara State, has been thrown into shock after the brutal murder of a 39-year-old pregnant woman, Mrs. Esther Enemo, in what authorities suspect to be a ritual killing.

The incident reportedly occurred late Wednesday at the home of her husband, Mr. Ekene Enemo. Residents said the victim was alone in the house when she was attacked and gruesomely dismembered. The discovery of her remains has sparked fear and outrage across the neighborhood.

When journalists visited the scene, locals described the incident as deeply disturbing. A resident, who requested anonymity, said the Enemos were not well-known in the area and mostly stayed out of sight.

> “They are Igbos, but we don’t really know what they do for a living. They usually come at night, and we hardly see them during the day,” the neighbor explained.

She recounted that her husband had seen a masked man leaving the compound on the night of the incident.

> “My husband challenged him. He removed the mask and identified himself as the husband’s younger brother. He locked the door from outside and walked away. It was strange because a woman was supposed to be inside, yet a man left. My husband called out to her through the window, but there was no reply. Shortly after, we saw blood stains and raised an alarm,” she added.

Another witness said police later found the woman’s lower body in the bush behind the residence, while other parts were discovered in a sack dumped beneath a nearby bridge.

According to reports, Mr. Ekene Enemo, a trader dealing in agricultural chemicals and equipment in Kwara North, was away at the time of the attack.

In a press release, the Kwara State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, confirmed the incident. She stated that detectives recovered the dismembered remains of Mrs. Enemo and other body parts hidden in a sack.

The statement revealed that the suspect, identified as 29-year-old Mr. Sylvester Enemo, the younger brother of the victim’s husband, was arrested after being seen leaving the house shortly before the gruesome discovery. The husband has also been contacted by the police for further questioning.

The body of the deceased has been taken to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) for autopsy.

Commissioner of Police, CP Ojo Adekimi, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the case, assuring the public that those responsible will be brought to justice. He also appealed to residents to remain calm and avoid spreading rumors that could heighten tension in the community.
