Nollywood actress Mercy Aigbe shared a poignant moment from her past when she almost departed from the movie industry due to facing sexual harassment.
During an interview on the talk show ‘Your View’ aired on TVC, the esteemed actress recounted a distressing incident involving a producer who made inappropriate advances after she successfully auditioned for a movie role.
Despite enduring numerous challenges in the industry, Mercy reflected on her journey to success, crediting her resilience and unwavering determination.
Describing the unsettling encounter, she disclosed, “Once, I met a producer in Surulere who I told about my passion for acting. He mentioned an upcoming film and invited me for an audition. I went through three rounds of auditions. However, after the final one, I was offered a minor role that wasn’t what I had auditioned for. He then suggested I be closer to him, citing the director’s lack of familiarity with me.”
“Before that incident, he had been making advances, but it was on that day that he explicitly revealed his intentions. He attempted to make unwanted physical contact, which deeply offended me. I firmly stood my ground, emphasizing that I deserved the role based on merit. It was a serious blow to my dignity. In that moment, I considered quitting acting. I tore up the script and left. It was disheartening because I had left a well-paying job to join Nollywood, particularly as a single mother at the time,” she emotionally recounted.
