President Tinubu has expressed concern over the Abuja–Kaduna train derailment, pledging immediate action and preventive measures as NRC MD takes full responsibility.

President Bola Tinubu has expressed sympathy to passengers affected by the Abuja–Kaduna train derailment, which occurred on Tuesday shortly after the train departed Abuja at around 11:00 a.m.

In a statement shared via his official X handle, Tinubu assured that he is awaiting a comprehensive briefing on the incident to enable swift action and support for those impacted. He also emphasized the need for stringent safety measures to avoid similar incidents in the future.

“Even while in Brazil, I received reports of the Abuja–Kaduna train derailment. I am deeply saddened by this event. My thoughts and prayers are with the injured, their families, and all passengers who endured this distressing experience. I await a full briefing to ensure immediate action and lasting preventive measures,” Tinubu stated.

NRC MD Accepts Responsibility

The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Kayode Opeifa, acknowledged responsibility for the derailment during an appearance on The Morning Brief on Channels Television. He stressed that safety lapses must be addressed thoroughly, adding that an investigation by technical experts and the Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) is ongoing.

“Beyond apologising to Nigerians, I take full responsibility as the chief executive. In matters of safety, there can be no indifference,” Opeifa said.

He also disclosed that four passengers sustained serious injuries, while two others were treated and discharged immediately. The NRC plans to follow up with the remaining 618 passengers due to potential post-traumatic effects.

Train Operations Suspended

Following the incident, NRC has suspended services on the Abuja–Kaduna route until further notice while investigations continue.
