Electricity supply was disrupted across several parts of Nigeria on Wednesday following another collapse of the national grid.
The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) confirmed the incident in a public notice posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) account. According to the company, the supply interruption began around 11:23 a.m. and affected all areas within its coverage.
> “The current outage is due to a loss of supply from the national grid. Please be assured we are working with relevant stakeholders to restore power as soon as the grid stabilises,” AEDC stated.
Customers were also provided with telephone and WhatsApp contact numbers for further inquiries and updates.
This latest system failure adds to the series of collapses recorded in recent years. Industry data show that the national grid broke down 12 times in 2024 and more than 100 times over the past decade. In February this year, a similar incident left large parts of the country without power.
In response to persistent blackouts, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) in April granted six private companies and one university the approval to generate and distribute electricity independently. Despite this, NERC reported in July that no system disturbance occurred on the grid in the first quarter of 2025.
