Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has voiced alarm over the growing attacks on security personnel across Nigeria.

In a statement on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, the former governor of Anambra State described the repeated assaults on soldiers, police officers, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps members, and local vigilantes as “heartbreaking” and “unacceptable.”

He noted that the sacrifices made by security operatives in safeguarding the country deserve national recognition and respect.

“Once again, Nigeria mourns the loss of brave men and women in uniform who have given their lives to protect our nation. Their dedication and ultimate sacrifice should never be taken for granted,” Obi stated.

Obi urged government leaders at all tiers to prioritise security by improving the welfare, equipment, and morale of officers, stressing that effective security is the foundation of good governance.

He also said Nigeria must stop burying security operatives without properly supporting their families.

“Government must take full responsibility for providing fair compensation and ongoing assistance to the spouses, children, and parents of these fallen heroes. This is not an act of kindness; it is an act of justice from a grateful nation,” he added.

Obi concluded by offering prayers for the souls of those killed and solidarity to their relatives.

“May every fallen hero rest in peace. Your courage and patriotism will never be forgotten. To your families, you are not alone—may God grant you strength and comfort,” he wrote.
