Precious Mbajiorgu, a visually impaired student at Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra State, recently divulged the circumstances leading to her loss of sight. Despite being recognized as the best candidate in the 2002 Senior School Certificate Examination’s physical disability category by the West African Examination Council, Mbajiorgu recounted the moment she became blind while tackling a mathematics question with her classmates.

In an interview with the Punch Newspaper, Mbajiorgu revealed that she wasn’t born blind and had no prior symptoms before losing her vision. Recalling the events of 2007-2008, she described the pivotal moment when her sight vanished.

“I wasn’t born blind. I had clear vision as a child until I turned 11. The incident occurred between 2007 and 2008, although the exact date eludes me. On that particular day, I attended Awada Primary School, Obosi, near Onitsha. It was there that I encountered visual impairment,” Mbajiorgu recounted.

She continued, sharing the distressing experience: “I was in the classroom solving mathematics on the board with my classmates. After answering the first math question, as I moved to the next, I suddenly realized I couldn’t see the board or anything else. Darkness enveloped my vision.”

Mbajiorgu expressed her astonishment, stating, “Prior to that moment, there were no warning signs or eye discomfort. It was an inexplicable occurrence that remains a mystery to me even now.”
