The Edo State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Agun Gbenga, passed away on Thursday after collapsing at a public event in Benin City, the state capital.

Gbenga reportedly slumped on his seat moments after presenting a goodwill message at a programme organised by the International Association of World Peace Advocates, held at the Bishop Kelly Pastoral Centre.

Efforts to revive him at the venue proved unsuccessful. He was quickly taken to the Military Hospital in Benin, where doctors confirmed him dead on arrival.

According to eyewitnesses, the commandant had arrived at the event in good health, making his sudden death all the more shocking. Attendees, gripped with fear and disbelief, fled the hall while others speculated on what might have led to the incident.

An attendee, Odion Ugbe, described the late commandant as a dedicated officer who served Nigeria diligently. He recalled speaking with him just last week about the importance of strengthening security across the country.

“It is painful that he died this way,” Ugbe said. “He came into the hall full of life, read his speech, and then slumped while seated. Medical professionals at the venue tried to resuscitate him, but when he was rushed to the hospital, the doctor confirmed he was already dead.”

The spokesperson for the NSCDC headquarters, Afolabi Babawale, also confirmed the development, stating, “Yes, it is true that we lost the Edo State Commandant this afternoon. He slumped during a function.”

The sudden death of Commandant Gbenga has thrown the security community and residents of Edo State into mourning, with tributes pouring in for his service and dedication.
