Twenty-four female students abducted from Government Girls Secondary School, Maga, in Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State, have been rescued.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, confirmed the development on Tuesday. He said the President commended the security agencies for their swift response and urged them to continue operations to recover other students still in captivity.
“I am relieved that all 24 girls have been accounted for. We must now strengthen security measures in vulnerable areas to prevent further kidnappings. My government will provide all necessary support to achieve this,” the President said.
The abduction occurred last Monday when armed bandits stormed the school hostel. Following the incident, Tinubu directed the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, to relocate to Kebbi to coordinate rescue efforts. While several students have now been released, security agencies remain on alert as other abduction cases continue across the country.
In recent days, armed assailants attacked a Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, Kwara State, abducting 38 worshippers during a vigil. Similarly, over 300 pupils and teachers were kidnapped from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Papiri, Niger State. These incidents have reignited national concern over school security, particularly in the North-West, where banditry is prevalent.
