Nigerian singer Sola Allyson has clarified her artistic identity, stating that she is not a gospel artist as many people assume. She also opened up about her unconventional marital arrangement.
Speaking in an interview with Oyinmomo TV, posted on YouTube on Friday, the Eji Owuro singer explained that she has never described herself as a gospel musician and intentionally avoids using Jesus’ name in her songs.
Switching between English and Yoruba, she said, “I don’t sing religious songs. I don’t call myself a gospel artist. My name is Sola Allyson. I am simply a singer.”
When asked why she doesn’t mention Jesus in her music, she responded, “Jesus didn’t tell us to keep calling His name. He didn’t ask for publicity.”
Allyson, 54, also addressed her marital life, revealing that although she is married, she and her husband do not live together.
“I am married, but I don’t live with my husband. He stays in his house, and I stay in mine. People before us made it seem like love leads to happily-ever-after, but it’s not that simple.”
She further explained her view of marriage, stressing that she and her partner entered the relationship as equals.
“Saying I am in my husband’s house suggests ownership. But I married my husband, and he married me. We are in each other’s lives.”
She also spoke briefly about feminism, noting that it originally sought to give women the same level of choice and freedom men enjoy.
“Feminism is not about saying men are bad. The idea was that the options men have should also be available to women,” she added.
