The Nigeria Police Force has announced that it will recommence the enforcement of tinted glass permit regulations nationwide from January 2, 2026.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, explained that the decision followed a reassessment of prevailing security concerns and the need to protect lives and property across the country.
According to him, the police were never barred by any court from enforcing the existing law on the use of tinted vehicle glass. However, enforcement was previously suspended to give motorists enough time to regularise their documents and complete the required registration process without undue pressure.
Hundyeyin noted that recent developments have shown an increase in criminal activities linked to vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass. He said criminals have taken advantage of such vehicles to hide their identities while carrying out offences including armed robbery, kidnapping and other violent crimes.
“In light of these security challenges, the Nigeria Police Force considers it necessary and urgent to fully resume enforcement as a preventive step to safeguard communities,” the statement said.
The police spokesperson confirmed that the renewed enforcement would officially begin on January 2, 2026.
He added that the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has assured the public that the exercise will be conducted professionally, lawfully and with respect for the rights of citizens.
The Force also reiterated its commitment to public safety, the rule of law and collaboration with stakeholders to ensure national security.
Motorists who require tinted glass permits were advised to apply through approved channels and ensure their vehicles comply with all legal requirements ahead of the enforcement date.
