The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has stated that he possesses the experience and credentials required to lead Nigeria, amid growing speculation about his interest in the 2027 presidential election.
Makinde made the statement during an interaction with selected journalists in Ibadan, where he pointed to his record in public office and his professional background as proof of his readiness for higher national responsibility.
According to the governor, serving as a two-term governor provides sufficient preparation for the presidency, noting that similar experience had previously served as a pathway to the nation’s highest office. He added that, by the end of his tenure in 2027, he would have completed eight years of leadership in Oyo State.
Makinde also referenced his private-sector experience, explaining that he began running a company at a relatively young age and built a career working with major multinational oil firms. He said his professional journey did not rely on government patronage, but on competence and international industry exposure.
Despite asserting his qualifications, the governor said it was premature to make a formal declaration regarding the 2027 presidential race.
He further stressed the importance of a healthy democratic system, arguing that strong opposition parties are essential for national stability. Makinde criticised the growing trend of political defections to the ruling party, questioning whether such moves had addressed the economic hardship and public frustration facing Nigerians.
He warned that political realignments alone would not resolve the country’s pressing challenges, urging leaders to focus on governance, accountability, and the welfare of citizens.
