A teenager has died after an incident at a hotel swimming pool in Owode-Ede, Osun State, sparking protests by friends and relatives of the deceased.
The incident occurred on Thursday at a hotel located along the Osogbo–Gbongan Road, where the teenager reportedly lost his life inside the swimming pool. As of the time of reporting, the exact circumstances surrounding the death had not been clearly established.
On Friday, tension rose when some individuals, believed to be friends and family members of the deceased, returned to the hotel to express their anger over how the situation was handled by the management. The protest, described as intense, attracted the attention of security agencies.
Sources said prompt intervention by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps prevented the situation from escalating further and restored calm at the premises.
An eyewitness explained that the teenager was confirmed dead after being found in the pool on January 1, adding that the protest followed dissatisfaction with the hotel’s response to the incident.
Confirming the development, the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer in Osun State, Emmanuel Giwa-Alade, said the incident did not involve mob violence. According to him, the victim’s family visited the hotel to air their grievances, and the matter was later resolved peacefully.
He also disclosed that the teenager died inside the hotel’s swimming pool and assured that the police had launched an investigation into the incident.
“An investigation is ongoing, and the public will be informed of our findings,” Giwa-Alade said.
