Pastor Chris Okafor, the Senior Pastor of Mountain of Liberation and Miracles Ministries, has temporarily stepped down from his pastoral duties following multiple sexual misconduct allegations. Last Sunday, during a church service, Okafor publicly apologized to actress Doris Ogala, kneeling on the pulpit and admitting to past mistakes.
The controversy comes shortly after his marriage to Pearl on December 16, 2025, a ceremony attended by several prominent clergy. The wedding went ahead despite Ogala’s public claims that Okafor had betrayed her, emotionally manipulated her, and failed to fulfill a long-standing promise of marriage.
Some members of the church have defended Okafor, dismissing the accusations as attempts to extort money or damage his reputation.
Pressure to Step Aside
As the allegations spread on social media, leaders within the Christian community reportedly urged Okafor to step back to calm tensions. A senior official from the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) confirmed that Okafor agreed to a temporary one-month break. The official emphasized that while the PFN can offer spiritual guidance and discipline, investigating criminal matters, including sexual misconduct, is the role of law enforcement.
“PFN does not have the authority to investigate or arrest anyone. Criminal allegations must be handled by the appropriate government agencies,” the official said.
Pastor Okafor’s Statement
During a New Year’s crossover service, Okafor said his break is meant for spiritual reflection and rest for both him and his wife. He stressed that he would not be completely absent from church activities and expects to return in February.
Allegations Against the Pastor
The claims first emerged on December 14 when actress Doris Ogala shared videos accusing Okafor of a sexual relationship with her that lasted for nine years. She alleged emotional distress, financial loss, and that he shared explicit materials of her. Ogala has demanded N1 billion in damages through her legal team.
Other women, including Okafor’s former wife Bessem Okafor and a former choir member, have also accused him of infidelity, manipulation, and sexual misconduct. Some allegations involve pregnancies, with calls for DNA tests to verify claims.
The Lagos State Police have said they cannot act as no formal complaints have been filed.
Church Members Defend the Pastor
Several long-term church members defended Okafor, describing the allegations as false and motivated by malice. They highlighted his contributions to the community and questioned why such claims would be made.
A pastor at the church noted that leaders often face challenges and criticism in their ministry, saying trials are a common part of spiritual work.
Calls for Accountability
Leaders of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) encouraged pastors to lead by example and maintain high moral standards. Archbishop Osazee William of the Ecumenical Synods of Bishops emphasized forgiveness and restoration, noting that while wrongdoing should not be excused, pastors are human and can repent.
He also urged ministers to practice self-discipline and be mindful of their vulnerabilities to prevent actions that could harm their ministry or the church.
