The Lagos State Taskforce has arrested 32 individuals for allegedly creating public disturbances and obstructing traffic on major highways across the state.
In a statement released on Monday by the agency’s spokesperson, Raheem Gbadeyan, the arrests were made during a coordinated enforcement operation carried out across both the Island and Mainland areas of Lagos. The operation followed repeated complaints from residents about the activities of street miscreants, commonly referred to as Omotaku.
According to the statement, the exercise formed part of the Taskforce’s ongoing clean-up campaign and covered several locations, including Apongbon, Fadeyi, Jibowu, Yaba Phase 1, Lagos Island, Palmgrove, Ojuelegba, Surulere, and surrounding roads.
Gbadeyan explained that officers observed the suspects unlawfully stopping vehicles such as petroleum tankers, trucks, trailers, lorries, and private cars, thereby disrupting traffic flow and endangering road users.
“During the operation, 32 suspects were arrested for constituting public nuisance, illegally obstructing highways, and violating the Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018 as well as the Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017,” the statement said.
He added that some of the suspects were found smoking substances suspected to be hard drugs, including Indian hemp.
The Chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce, CSP Adetayo Akerele, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to maintaining public safety and order across the state.
“We will continue to patrol all areas of Lagos to rid our roads of criminal elements and activities that threaten the safety of residents,” Akerele stated.
He noted that the operation helped restore order in the affected areas and confirmed that the arrested individuals have been charged in court.
