A Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Samuel Oyetoro, has been killed in Ajaokuta, Kogi State, with the police confirming that investigations are underway to identify and arrest those responsible.

Drivetvnews gathered that the late cleric, who was born in Egbe, Yagba West Local Government Area and hailed from Ayetoro in Ijumu Local Government Area, was serving at St. Paul’s Parish, Ayetoro Gbede, in Ijumu LGA before his death.

According to reports, Oyetoro was attacked with a machete, and his lifeless body was later discovered by the roadside along Church Road in Ajaokuta.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Kogi State Police Command, ASP Oyiza Afusat, said officers received a report on July 29, 2026, at about 9:30 a.m. that an unidentified male had been found dead at the location.

Police operatives who arrived at the scene observed that the victim had sustained severe machete wounds to the head. The body was evacuated to ASCL Hospital, where a doctor confirmed him dead before it was deposited at the mortuary for an autopsy.

The deceased was subsequently identified as Rev. Fr. Samuel Oyetoro of St. Paul’s Parish, Ayetoro Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area.

The police said investigations are ongoing to apprehend those behind the killing. The case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) after preliminary investigations for further action.

The tragic incident has thrown the Catholic community and residents of Kogi State into mourning, with many calling for a thorough investigation and justice for the slain priest.
