Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has described the abduction of 39 students and seven teachers in Oriire Local Government Area as a major test of the security architecture established by his administration.
Drivetvnews gathered that Makinde made the statement on Tuesday while receiving the report of the judicial commission of inquiry constituted to investigate the incident.
The report was presented to the governor by the chairman of the commission, Professor Mojeed Owoade.
Drivetvnews gathered that the victims were abducted on Friday, May 15, 2026, from communities in Oriire Local Government Area and later rescued after spending about 10 weeks in captivity.
Following their rescue, Makinde constituted the commission to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and assess the response of relevant institutions.
Receiving the report, the governor said the commission was mandated to determine how the attack happened, what intelligence was available at the time and how government agencies responded.
Makinde said the incident exposed areas requiring further attention within the state’s security system.
He noted that when his administration assumed office, the 615 toll-free emergency line had already been approved but was not operational, while the City Watch and Security Control Room infrastructure had also been initiated, although some aspects were not functioning effectively.
The governor said the administration could not rely solely on previous improvements in crime reduction while overlooking a serious security failure.
He assured residents that the government would carefully study the commission’s recommendations and take appropriate decisions based on its findings.
Makinde also said the report would help determine responsibilities and guide further measures to strengthen security across the state.
According to him, protecting children and other residents must remain a key measure of the effectiveness of any changes introduced following the incident.
