The Oyo State Government has launched a daily environmental sanitation monitoring and enforcement system aimed at promoting a cleaner and healthier environment across the state.
The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto, made this known during a press briefing marking his first 100 days in office. He explained that the government has moved away from the traditional monthly sanitation exercise to a more consistent approach that encourages residents to maintain cleanliness every day.
According to him, environmental health officers are now actively deployed across the state to ensure compliance and reinforce the new system.
Aderinto disclosed that the ministry has strengthened its operations by re-engaging 930 environmental workers, including vanguards, sweepers, and waste handlers. In addition, two new compactor trucks have been acquired with the support of Governor Seyi Makinde to improve waste collection and disposal.
He added that street sweepers will now operate twice daily to keep roads clean, while also benefiting from the state’s health insurance scheme.
To encourage public participation, the government has introduced the “Oyo Soro Soke” environmental whistleblower platform, which allows residents to report environmental violations through mobile apps and WhatsApp.
The ministry has also implemented a waste segregation system within government offices and partnered with private organisations to construct modern public toilets.
Highlighting other achievements, Aderinto noted increased public awareness campaigns on issues such as flooding, heat waves, cholera, and Lassa fever. He also mentioned efforts to regulate charcoal production, promote tree planting during World Earth Day, and intensify actions against open defecation.
He expressed appreciation to the state government for its support and assured residents that the administration remains committed to sustaining and improving environmental standards.
