The Nkwo market in Umunze, Orumba South Local Government Area, LGA, of Anambra State fell victim to a devastating fire outbreak on Wednesday. At around 1:20 am, the inferno ignited due to a power surge, engulfing the market in flames.Eyewitnesses lamented the destruction caused by the fire, which ravaged goods worth millions, including household items and plastic materials.Thankfully, State Fire Chief, Dr. Martin Agbili, confirmed that there were no casualties resulting from the incident. He stated, “At about 1:20 am on Wednesday, 21-02-2024, Anambra State Fire Service received a distress call regarding a fire outbreak at Nkwo Market, Umunze.”Responding swiftly, firefighters and volunteers battled the flames, managing to control and extinguish the fire with the assistance of traders and members of the public.Although the exact cause of the fire remains undetermined, suspicions point towards a power surge. Approximately four shops, predominantly provision shops, plastic shops, and attachments shops, bore the brunt of the damage.Dr. Agbili urged caution, advising people to switch off electrical and electronic appliances when not in use to prevent future incidents of power surges leading to devastating fires.
