The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 300-level student of the University of Port Harcourt, identified as Cynthia Chukwundah, for allegedly setting her 32-year-old partner, Sunny Amadi, on fire at a residence in Choba, located in the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state.

The tragic incident reportedly occurred on Sunday following a heated altercation between the two. Sources disclosed that the disagreement was linked to Chukwundah’s claim of being pregnant, which eventually led to the fatal confrontation.

According to reports, Amadi sustained severe burns during the incident and was immediately taken to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, where he later died as a result of the injuries.

The spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Tuesday. She noted that the suspect, who also suffered burns, is currently undergoing treatment at a medical facility under police surveillance.

Part of the statement read:

“The Rivers State Police Command is aware of a widely circulated report on social media regarding a fire incident that occurred at No. 11B Okoro Street, Choba, Port Harcourt.

“Preliminary investigations suggest that Cynthia Chukwundah, a 300-level student of the University of Port Harcourt, allegedly set her boyfriend, identified as Saint Sunny Amadi from Elibrada Community in Emohua Local Government Area, on fire inside a room. The victim sustained critical injuries as a result.

“He was rushed to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital for emergency care, but unfortunately, he later died from the burns.”

Iringe-Koko also revealed that Chukwundah, who is confirmed to be pregnant with the deceased’s child, is still receiving treatment and is not yet in a stable condition to provide a full statement.

She added that the cause of the fire is yet to be determined and that a comprehensive investigation is underway to establish the facts surrounding the case.

The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, has called for calm and assured the public that justice will be pursued diligently.
