The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has condemned the assault of one of its members, Edema Elohor Jennifer (AN/24C/0626), in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the NYSC described the attack as unacceptable and reassured Nigerians of its commitment to protecting corps members nationwide.

“Management wishes to reaffirm its strong commitment to the welfare and safety of Corps Members across the country and will not condone any act that endangers their lives,” the statement said.

The organisation expressed concern over the incident, insisting that justice must prevail. It also urged host communities and security agencies to collaborate in creating a safe environment for those on national service.

According to the NYSC, preliminary findings showed that operatives of the Anambra State Vigilante Group invaded a Corps Lodge in Oba, claiming the premises were being used for illegal activities—a claim the scheme noted has not been proven.

“During the raid, the vigilante operatives ordered all occupants to submit to a search and, in the process, physically assaulted Corps Member Jennifer, who was only visiting the lodge,” the statement explained.

The management confirmed that the matter has been reported to the police, and investigations are ongoing to ensure that those responsible face the law.

Restating its zero-tolerance policy on intimidation, harassment, or abuse of corps members, the NYSC appealed to host communities and the general public to safeguard corps members in their places of assignment and residence to enable them to serve in a secure and conducive environment.
