Three people have lost their lives and eight others sustained injuries after armed attackers struck Akunza Ashige community in Lafia Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
The Nasarawa State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement released on Wednesday by its spokesperson, SP Ramhan Nansel. According to the police, the attack was reported on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, through a distress call alerting authorities to gunmen operating in the area.
Following the report, the Commissioner of Police, Shetima Jauro-Mohammed, immediately ordered the deployment of mobile police units and other tactical teams to the community to contain the situation and assist victims.
Police operatives recovered two bodies at the scene and rescued nine injured persons, who were taken to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. One of the injured victims later died in the early hours of Wednesday, raising the number of fatalities to three. The remaining injured persons are still receiving care.
The Commissioner of Police conveyed the command’s sympathy to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery. He also directed senior officers to carry out a detailed investigation into the attack.
According to the statement, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department and the Assistant Commissioner of Police overseeing operations have been mandated to identify those responsible and ensure their arrest and prosecution.
The police reassured residents of Akunza Ashige and surrounding communities of their commitment to restoring peace and bringing the perpetrators to justice, while urging the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information.
