The Kebbi State Police Command has confirmed that 33 villagers were killed during a clash with suspected Lakurawa terrorists in Bui District, Arewa Local Government Area of the state.

In a statement issued in Birnin Kebbi, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, said the incident occurred after armed militants reportedly entered the community to rustle cattle.

According to the police, the attackers are believed to have crossed into the area from Gudu Local Government Area of Sokoto State. Residents from Mamunu, Awasaka, Tungan Tsoho, Makangara, Kanzo, Gorun Naidal and Dan Mai Ago allegedly mobilised to resist the rustlers, leading to a violent confrontation that claimed 33 lives.

The command expressed regret over the loss of lives and extended condolences to the bereaved families and the entire Arewa community.

Usman said security had since been strengthened in Bui District, with the police working alongside the military and other security agencies. Additional personnel and operational equipment have been deployed, while patrols are ongoing to stabilise the area and prevent further attacks.

He stressed that situations involving armed criminal groups require coordinated security responses and cautioned residents against directly confronting such elements due to the risks involved.

The police urged members of the public to report suspicious activities through appropriate security channels. They also assured that targeted operations are underway to track down those responsible, prevent a recurrence, and improve early warning systems in vulnerable communities.
