The Nigeria Police Force has clarified that the ₦100 million transferred into the personal bank account of Victor Egbetokun, son of the former Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, was a banking mistake and was immediately returned.
The explanation follows reports circulated online claiming that the funds were traced to the Anambra State Government’s security vote account.
Speaking during an appearance on Politics Today on Channels Television, the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that Victor noticed the unexpected deposit and promptly instructed that the money be reversed.
According to Hundeyin, once the issue was brought to his attention, he contacted the IGP’s son, who explained that he discovered the ₦100 million in his account and immediately directed his bank officer to return the funds.
He added that Victor provided his bank statement as proof that the money had been refunded. Hundeyin also revealed that the account in question was subsequently closed, and Victor petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to investigate the allegation.
The police spokesperson maintained that the transaction resulted from a banking error and confirmed that the funds were returned to the appropriate government account shortly after the mistake was detected.
He emphasized that there was no misconduct involved and described the incident as an erroneous transfer that was swiftly corrected.
