Opposition political parties in Nigeria have resolved to present a single presidential candidate for the 2027 general election in a bid to strengthen their chances against the ruling party.
Drivetvnews gathered that the decision was reached at a national summit held in Ibadan, where party leaders gathered to discuss strategies for the upcoming election. The meeting concluded with a communiqué outlining their commitment to unity and collaboration.
According to the agreement, opposition leaders intend to work together to produce a consensus candidate capable of competing effectively against the expected candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress.
The leaders stated that their goal is to protect Nigeria’s democratic system and prevent any attempt to establish a one-party structure. They also emphasised the need for collective action to address national challenges and improve governance.
In addition, the parties called on the National Assembly to review the Electoral Act 2026, particularly provisions they believe could undermine free and fair elections. They also urged the electoral body to adjust timelines for party primaries to allow adequate preparation.
Concerns were raised about the neutrality of the electoral process, with opposition figures expressing doubts over the ability of current leadership within the electoral commission to ensure credible elections.
The coalition further demanded the release of political figures allegedly detained over bailable offences, arguing that such actions could limit participation in the democratic process.
Several prominent political figures attended the summit, reaffirming their commitment to building a united front ahead of the election.
The development marks a significant move toward opposition unity, although it remains unclear whether all political parties in the country will adopt the single-candidate approach.
