One of the teachers abducted from Community High School, Ahoro-Esinele in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, Michael Oyedokun, has reportedly been killed by suspected bandits.
A disturbing video allegedly released by the kidnappers on Sunday showed the teacher being murdered after he was tied up and forced to speak. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and renewed fears over the safety of other victims still being held captive.
Residents of the community, relatives of the abducted victims and concerned Nigerians have continued to call on security agencies and the Oyo State Government to intensify efforts to rescue those remaining in captivity.
The Special Adviser on Media to Governor Seyi Makinde, Dr Suleimon Olanrewaju, confirmed the development in a statement on Monday. He said the governor sympathised with the family of the deceased teacher and assured the public that both security operations and negotiations were being explored to secure the release of the remaining victims.
According to him, about six suspects linked to the abduction have already been arrested. He also disclosed that some security personnel involved in the rescue mission lost their lives after encountering improvised explosive devices allegedly planted by the kidnappers.
Olanrewaju stated that injured operatives are currently receiving treatment and responding positively, adding that the state government would provide the necessary support for them.
He appealed to families of the abducted victims, religious groups and residents to remain patient while rescue efforts continue.
Speaking further, he revealed that seven teachers were abducted during the attack, noting that the slain victim was believed to be the school’s mathematics teacher.
The government also confirmed that additional suspects believed to be informants or logistics suppliers for the kidnappers had been arrested by security operatives in the state.
The attack occurred on Friday, May 15, when armed men stormed the school and abducted the principal, teachers and several students. The incident has further heightened concerns over growing insecurity in Oyo State and other parts of the country.
