The Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has paid tribute to renowned Nollywood actor and theatre scholar Kola Oyewo, who passed away on Friday at the age of 80.
In a statement released by palace spokesperson Moses Olafare, the monarch described Oyewo as a distinguished cultural figure whose contributions to Yoruba heritage, theatre, and education left a lasting impact on Nigeria’s cultural landscape.
According to the Ooni, the late actor devoted his life to promoting Yoruba language, traditions, and values through his work in both the performing arts and academia. He noted that although Oyewo hailed from Oba-Ile in Osun State, he spent much of his life in Ile-Ife, where he became widely respected for his role in advancing cultural and intellectual development.
The monarch praised Oyewo as a custodian of Yoruba heritage whose performances and scholarly work helped preserve indigenous traditions while inspiring generations of actors, researchers, and culture enthusiasts.
He further stated that Oyewo’s influence extended beyond entertainment, highlighting his contributions to education, mentorship, and cultural preservation. The Ooni expressed confidence that the actor’s legacy would continue to inspire future generations.
Offering condolences to the Oyewo family, friends, colleagues, and admirers, the traditional ruler urged them to find comfort in the remarkable life, achievements, and enduring impact of the late cultural icon.
