The Anambra State Government has confirmed the arrest of Harrison Charles, founder of Day Spring Assembly in Awada, Onitsha, over allegations involving multiple marriages and controversial practices within his church.
According to state authorities, the pastor was apprehended by operatives of the Agunechemba security outfit after a viral video surfaced containing accusations against him. The government said he has since been handed over to the police for further investigation.
Officials disclosed that several church members accused the cleric of persuading married women to leave their husbands and become his wives. Some of the allegations claim that dozens of women were involved. He is also being investigated over claims that he encouraged wife-swapping among members of his congregation.
The state government emphasised that the allegations have not been proven in court and that investigations are still ongoing.
Speaking on the matter, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, Dr. Ejimofor Opara, revealed that security operatives found 11 babies at the pastor’s residence during the operation. According to Opara, the pastor claimed to be the father of all the children and said they were born by 11 of his wives. He also reportedly stated that he could not accurately determine the total number of wives and children he has.
Authorities said they are working with the police to establish the facts surrounding the allegations and determine whether any laws were violated. Residents with useful information have been encouraged to assist investigators.
The arrest is part of the Anambra State Government’s ongoing efforts to tackle alleged fraudulent religious activities and hold individuals accountable for actions that may violate the law.
