A civil society organisation, Prayer and Support for the Nigerian Armed Forces and Other Security Agencies (PASNAFOSA), has called on the Federal Government to discontinue the practice of granting amnesty to individuals linked to terrorism, particularly former Boko Haram members undergoing reintegration programmes.

The group made the appeal while reacting to the reported death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, who allegedly died while being held captive by kidnappers in Katsina State.

In a statement issued by its Convener, Ambassador Mary Abayomi-Fatile, PASNAFOSA described the retired officer’s death as a painful loss and urged authorities to intensify efforts against insecurity, banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism across the country.

According to reports, Major General Abubakar and his wife were abducted while travelling through Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State. The retired military officer was said to have died during captivity after developing health complications.

The organisation expressed sadness over the incident, noting that the late general dedicated a significant part of his life to protecting Nigeria and its citizens.

PASNAFOSA stated that the tragedy should serve as a reminder of the urgent need for stronger security measures and more effective strategies to combat criminal activities nationwide. The group also called on security agencies to ensure that those responsible for the abduction and death of the retired officer are identified and prosecuted.

Beyond security concerns, the organisation reiterated its opposition to the continued pardon and reintegration of former terrorists without sufficient accountability for their actions.

The group argued that while rehabilitation initiatives may be necessary in some cases, justice for victims and the safety of citizens should remain the government’s top priority. It expressed concern over the reintegration of former Boko Haram members despite the widespread destruction, loss of lives, and suffering caused by insurgent activities over the years.

PASNAFOSA maintained that any rehabilitation programme should be balanced with accountability measures to ensure public confidence and lasting peace.
