The 2026 Egungun Festival in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, has been cancelled following the fatal shooting of a person during a disturbance in the Aguodo area, just one day before the annual celebration was scheduled to end.

Drivetvnews gathered that the decision was announced by the Soun of Ogbomosoland, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, Orumogege III, in an emergency statement signed by the Palace Secretary, Mr. Toyin Ajamu.

According to the statement, the monarch ordered the immediate cancellation of the festival after reports of violent attacks by suspected hoodlums raised concerns over public safety.

The palace directed security agencies to arrest anyone found continuing the festival or engaging in activities capable of disrupting public peace.

“Following a series of attacks by some hoodlums which may lead to unforeseen circumstances, and on the directive of His Imperial Majesty, the 2026 Egungun Festival is hereby cancelled with immediate effect,” the statement said.

It added that anyone who ignores the directive by continuing celebrations or causing trouble should be dealt with in accordance with the law.

The palace also appealed to residents to cooperate with law enforcement agencies to ensure peace and order across Ogbomoso.

The festival began on Wednesday, July 8, and had proceeded peacefully until the fatal incident occurred on Saturday evening.

Before the commencement of the celebration, traditional rulers and community stakeholders had held several meetings aimed at ensuring a peaceful festival and preventing the violence that had marred previous editions.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased, while investigations into the shooting are ongoing.
