The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, has mocked the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, over his request for permission to launch his 2027 election campaign at the Presidential Villa.

Drivetvnews gathered that Sowore had reportedly written to the relevant authorities seeking approval to hold his campaign launch at the seat of Nigeria’s presidency.

Reacting during an interview on Channels Television, Basiru dismissed the request and described the human rights activist as a skit maker.

When asked whether he would advise the APC to grant Sowore’s request, Basiru said the AAC candidate should first demonstrate his political relevance by winning a seat in a State House of Assembly.

“Sowore is a skit maker. Let him struggle to even get a seat in the House of Assembly as a politician, and then people will begin to take him seriously,” he said.

Basiru further claimed that rejected ballot papers received more votes than the AAC in the 2023 general election.

He argued that the party’s performance in the previous election showed that Sowore was not a serious contender for political power.

“Sowore is my friend. We were in the trenches together. He’s a skit maker. He knows that that will not happen,” Basiru said.

He added that even rejected ballot papers were more popular than the AAC during the 2023 election, describing Sowore’s request as another attempt to attract public attention.

Basiru maintained that he would tell Sowore directly that he was behaving like a comedian if they met.
