Former Kogi West senator and African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain, Dino Melaye, has criticised Vice President Kashim Shettima, arguing that his record in public office does not justify another term.
Melaye made the remarks in an article titled “A Record That Cannot Carry A Second Term,” published on his verified X account. He questioned Shettima’s achievements during his time as governor of Borno State and his impact on the North-East.
The former lawmaker argued that politicians seeking re-election should be assessed based on their performance and tangible results, insisting that Shettima had not recorded achievements worthy of another term.
Shettima governed Borno State from 2011 to 2019, a period marked by the Boko Haram insurgency, which caused widespread insecurity across the region.
Melaye also referenced the abduction of more than 200 schoolgirls from Chibok in April 2014, which occurred during Shettima’s tenure as governor and became one of the most prominent incidents associated with the insurgency.
He expressed concern that the North-East continues to experience attacks on military installations, the abduction of children and the displacement of communities despite Shettima’s experience as governor, senator and vice president.
Citing recent security incidents, Melaye mentioned an alleged attack on a military base in Marte, where soldiers were reportedly killed and military gun trucks seized. He also referred to an assault in Chibok and the reported abduction of girls in Askira/Uba.
“These cannot justify a second term for Shettima,” Melaye said.
He maintained that leadership should be assessed by the results achieved rather than announcements about efforts made while in office.
