Six dead, 23 injured as truck crashes on Lagos–Ibadan Expressway
Six people lost their lives while 23 others sustained injuries following a lone truck accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway on Monday.
The crash occurred near Foursquare Camp and involved a white-and-blue DAF CF 380 trailer with registration number SNA 287 XA. The vehicle, which was travelling from northern Nigeria to Lagos State, was reportedly carrying passengers alongside about 35 cattle.
Preliminary findings attributed the accident to excessive speed and driver fatigue. In the incident, 29 cows were also killed.
Emergency responders evacuated the injured victims and the bodies of the deceased to Oreoluwa Hospital at GOFAMINT Camp, Ogunmakin, as well as Victory Hospital in Ogere.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Afolabi Odunsi-Oyewole, said the crash was reported at about 11:27 a.m., and rescue teams arrived at the scene within two minutes.
According to him, a total of 29 persons were involved in the accident, with 23 sustaining various degrees of injuries while six were confirmed dead.
Odunsi-Oyewole condemned the practice of transporting passengers alongside animals, describing it as dangerous. He explained that mixed loading makes rescue operations difficult during accidents and significantly increases the risk of fatalities.
The FRSC stated that investigations were ongoing to determine the exact mechanical and human factors that led to the crash.
Meanwhile, motorists, particularly operators of heavy-duty vehicles, were advised to carry out regular vehicle inspections, adhere to speed limits, and ensure adequate rest before long journeys in order to reduce the risk of road accidents.
