The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 52-year-old man, Ndibe Jude Onyenwe, over an alleged conspiracy involving attempted kidnapping, grievous gunshot injuries and murder in Urum community, Awka North Local Government Area of the state.
The police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, stating that the suspect was handed over to the command on February 5, 2026, by operatives of the 302 Artillery Regiment of the Nigerian Army, Onitsha Cantonment.
According to Ikenga, Onyenwe was accused of working with one Felix Godwin and other accomplices who are still on the run to sponsor armed men to carry out a deadly ambush along a road in Urum, targeting innocent road users.
He explained that the attack left six people seriously wounded after sustaining gunshot injuries.
Ikenga further revealed that during interrogation, the suspect allegedly admitted that Felix Godwin transferred ₦500,000 through an Access Bank account to hire four gunmen from Ayamelum Local Government Area, as well as another suspect identified as Emeka from Urum, who was said to have led the operation.
The suspect also reportedly stated that Felix gave him an additional ₦350,000 to purchase four packets of cartridges used during the ambush.
The police spokesperson said the suspect remains in custody as investigations continue, while efforts have been intensified to track down and arrest other individuals connected to the crime.
Ikenga assured residents that the command remains committed to maintaining peace and ensuring justice, adding that the public would be informed as the investigation progresses.
The police also recalled that the command recently arrested another suspect linked to kidnapping, armed robbery and cult-related crimes in Awka, where a ransom of ₦1 million was allegedly collected.
