Several people are feared to have lost their lives following a fresh attack by suspected armed herders on the Ojatele area of Benue State.
Reports indicate that the attack occurred on Friday evening in Apa Local Government Area, leaving many residents injured while others remain unaccounted for.
A resident who spoke anonymously said the attackers arrived with a large herd of cattle before suddenly opening fire on villagers who were returning from their cashew farms.
According to the witness, the incident happened when women and children who had gone to gather cashew nuts were heading back home. The armed men allegedly began shooting, causing panic and forcing many residents to flee.
The source claimed that more than 15 people may have been killed in the attack, while several others sustained injuries. Some of the wounded victims were reportedly taken to a hospital in Ugbokpo for treatment.
Another resident, who identified himself as Abu Abel, also alleged that armed herders carried out the attack and said the community has since been deserted due to fear.
He called on authorities to intervene, stating that residents currently feel unsafe and lack adequate security protection.
The Chairman of Apa Local Government, Adams Ada Ochega, confirmed that an attack occurred in the area but explained that he had not yet received a full briefing on the incident.
He noted that he was away on official duties when the attack happened and requested more time to gather detailed information before making further comments.
Efforts to reach the spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, Udeme Edet, were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
