Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume has called on the Federal Government to focus more on security and governance rather than political activities ahead of the 2027 elections, following recent bombings in Maiduguri.

The lawmaker was reacting to the explosions that struck parts of the city, reportedly carried out by Boko Haram. The attacks occurred at multiple locations, including the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, the Monday Market Roundabout, and a nearby post office.

In addition to the bombings, insurgents were said to have launched attacks on military positions in Ajari, Baga, and Damboa.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Ndume expressed deep concern over the continued loss of lives in the North-East and other parts of the country, noting that many citizens remain vulnerable to attacks by insurgents and bandits.

He urged the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to shift attention away from political calculations and concentrate on ensuring the safety and welfare of Nigerians.

According to him, governance should prioritise protecting lives and improving living conditions, warning that neglecting these responsibilities could erode public trust in government.

Ndume stressed that the country is facing a serious security crisis and called for visible and decisive action to address it. He also highlighted the need to account for people still missing from previous attacks in affected communities.

The senator further appealed to security agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering and investigations to prevent future incidents. He suggested that tracking the source of explosives, including those allegedly transported using vehicles such as tricycles, could help identify those responsible.

He also extended condolences to the government and people of Borno State, as well as families of victims, noting that the scale of casualties warrants national reflection and mourning.
