The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 38-year-old man, Hamisu Abdullahi, for allegedly shouting “no water, no light” during a visit by Mohammed Umaru Bago to Suleja.

According to the police spokesperson, Wasiu Abiodun, the incident occurred during the governor’s post-Eid visit to the Emir’s palace. He explained that the suspect was taken into custody for allegedly attempting to disrupt official activities during the event.

Abiodun added that Abdullahi was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Minna for further questioning before being granted bail, while investigations continue.

The suspect’s brother confirmed that he was released after spending several days in detention.

Reports indicate that Abdullahi, an electrician and father of four, was arrested shortly after making the remark at the palace. There were also unverified claims suggesting that the arrest may have been influenced by higher authorities, though this has not been confirmed.

When contacted, the governor’s spokesperson, Bologi Ibrahim, said he had no knowledge of the incident.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian chapter of the International Press Institute has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to caution the state government against actions that could threaten press freedom.

In a joint statement, the organisation raised concerns that certain actions by government officials in the state could hinder journalists and media organisations from carrying out their duties effectively.
