The Sokoto State Police Command has confirmed an overnight attack by armed bandits on a community in Sokoto State, where several people were kidnapped and others injured.
The incident occurred around 11:00 p.m. on Wednesday in Chacho village, located in Wurno Local Government Area. Residents were thrown into panic as heavily armed attackers invaded the area, reportedly entering through a route connected to the Sabon Birni forest.
Police spokesperson Ahmad Rufai disclosed that security operatives were quickly deployed to the scene, with efforts already underway to track down the assailants and rescue those abducted.
He explained that tactical teams have been mobilised while investigations continue to determine the exact number of victims taken during the attack.
Eyewitnesses said the gunmen struck while most residents were asleep, forcing many to flee for safety as gunshots rang out across the community.
One resident recounted that people ran in different directions after hearing the alarm, adding that the sound of gunfire created widespread fear and confusion.
Preliminary reports indicate that about nine individuals, mostly women and elderly men, were abducted, while at least two others sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment.
The police assured residents that efforts are ongoing to restore calm and secure the area. Authorities also urged the public to remain vigilant and provide useful information that could assist ongoing operations.
The latest incident has increased concerns over rising bandit attacks in the region, with residents calling for stronger and sustained security presence to prevent further attacks.
