A recent incident reported in Osun State has once again brought the Yoruba traditional belief in magun into public conversation, after a man reportedly collapsed and those around him attributed the incident to the age-old belief.

According to accounts circulating on social media, the man was believed to have encountered magun, traditionally associated with sexual relationships involving a married woman. In the unusual account, people reportedly claimed that the woman suspected of being involved with him could save him by urinating into his mouth.

The woman, however, allegedly denied knowing the man and refused to carry out the supposed remedy.

The bizarre story has generated reactions and humour online, but it also raises an important question about the difference between traditional beliefs and medical explanations.

Magun is part of Yoruba folklore, with different communities and traditional practitioners associating it with various forms, consequences and supposed remedies. These beliefs, however, are not scientific evidence that a traditional charm caused a particular illness or death.

A person who suddenly collapses, struggles to breathe or becomes seriously ill should receive urgent medical attention rather than being treated solely on the basis of a supernatural explanation.

Some traditional accounts describe different forms of magun and associate them with particular prohibitions. One popularly mentioned variety is linked to ilà, meaning okra, while others are associated with water or specific taboos.

Another widely told version claims that a person affected by magun could repeatedly somersault before dying. Such accounts remain part of folklore and differ across communities.

The Osun incident has also renewed humorous discussions about the alleged urine remedy associated with some traditional accounts of magun. Beyond the humour, however, such practices should not replace emergency medical care when someone is seriously ill.

Whether or not one believes in magun, extramarital relationships can carry real-world consequences, including emotional distress, family conflict, sexually transmitted infections, violence and other forms of social harm.

Yoruba folklore has often used memorable names and warnings to communicate social values. Magun, literally associated with the warning not to climb, has traditionally served as one such caution against forbidden relationships.

But in a modern emergency, the most important response remains straightforward: seek medical assistance first and allow health professionals to determine what is happening.
