Nollywood actress Funke Akindele has sparked discussions on social media after she failed to attend the premiere of her protégé, skit maker Akinyoola Ayoola, popularly known as Kamo State.
Kamo held the Lagos premiere of his debut cinema film, Star Lomo, on Sunday, but Akindele’s absence drew attention from some social media users because of their previously close relationship.
The relationship between the two became more prominent during the production and promotion of Everybody Loves Jenifa in 2024, with Kamo featuring regularly in content shared by Akindele.
Akindele had also hosted Kamo and his wife on several occasions and supported some of his projects. Through their association, Kamo appeared in productions including Aiyetoro Town Season 2, Behind The Scenes and Everybody Loves Jenifa.
However, their public appearances together reportedly became less frequent earlier this year, with Kamo appearing less often on Akindele’s social media platforms.
The change, combined with her absence from his movie premiere, has led some social media users to speculate that the duo may have fallen out. Some users also compared the situation with Akindele’s past relationships with other protégés.
However, others defended the actress, pointing out that she was in Ghana at the time of the premiere for a staycation with singer Waje, who is part of the cast of her upcoming film, The Four.
Some social media users questioned why Akindele did not attend the premiere, while others argued that her previous support for Kamo should not be overlooked.
A user identified as Depegan of Lagos questioned her absence, noting that Kamo had supported Akindele during her own movie promotions and asking why she was not present for his project.
Others countered that Akindele had previously promoted Kamo’s work, featured him in her films, attended his wedding and supported his family events.
Another group argued that her absence from one event was not enough evidence to conclude that there was a disagreement between the two.
While the speculation has continued online, there is no confirmed information establishing that Funke Akindele and Kamo State are currently at odds.
Kamo’s association with Akindele has previously included professional collaborations and public displays of mutual support.
