Ariko community in Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State was targeted by armed attackers on Sunday, as they assaulted two Christian churches during Easter celebrations. The attack left at least seven people dead and several others abducted, throwing the area into chaos.

Mark Bawa, the councillor for Awon Ward, which includes Ariko, confirmed the assault to PUNCH Online. The churches affected were First ECWA Church and St. Augustine Catholic Church.

“I am on my way to the community to verify the number of casualties. Reports vary, with some saying seven and others eight deaths. I will update once the numbers are confirmed,” Bawa said, noting that poor network coverage in the area may have allowed the attackers to operate without immediate response.

According to Bawa, the assailants arrived in large numbers, surrounding the area and firing at worshippers. Many were killed, and several individuals were taken into nearby forests.

Residents reported that the attackers operated for an extended period without intervention, raising concerns about the vulnerability of rural communities in Kaduna State.

This incident follows a similar attack in February 2026 in Kurmin Wali, Kachia LGA, where worshippers were abducted during a church service. The recurring violence has prompted renewed calls for enhanced security in Southern Kaduna, especially during religious gatherings.

Kaduna State Police Public Relations Officer DSP Mansir Hassan stated that the police would release more information on the incident. Observers warn that these repeated attacks highlight ongoing security challenges in the region, particularly during festive periods.

Further updates are expected as authorities continue to assess the situation.
