The Nigerian Correctional Service in Yobe State has declared a convicted inmate wanted after he escaped custody following a road accident involving a prison transport vehicle.
The incident occurred on April 13 while inmates were being moved from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Potiskum to Damaturu. During the journey, the vehicle conveying the prisoners was involved in a crash, creating confusion at the scene.
According to officials, the inmate took advantage of the situation as efforts were underway to assist those affected by the accident and fled from custody.
The fugitive has been identified as Dahiru Mohammed, a 30-year-old man from Askiwari village in Tarmuwa. Authorities revealed that he had been in custody since November 29, 2024.
The correctional service described him as dangerous and advised members of the public to avoid any form of contact with him. Residents were urged to immediately report any useful information about his whereabouts to the nearest police station or correctional facility.
Officials also warned that anyone found harbouring or assisting the escapee would face legal consequences, stressing that aiding a fugitive is a serious offence under the law.
Efforts are ongoing to locate and return the inmate to custody.
