Tension erupted in Edjeba community in Warri, Delta State, after a group of masqueraders accompanied by youths reportedly attacked a branch of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), leaving six worshippers injured, including the pastor.
Drivetvnews gathered that the incident occurred around 10 a.m. on April 19, shortly after the church’s Sunday service had ended at its Edjeba Shell Gate location.
According to eyewitnesses, the presiding pastor, identified as Barrister Albert, was preparing to leave with his family when a procession of masqueraders and youths passed by the church. He reportedly waited within the premises to allow them to move on, but tensions rose when one of the masqueraders allegedly tried to harass female congregants.
The pastor’s attempt to intervene reportedly sparked violence, as the group turned on him. Church members who rushed to his defence were also attacked, leading to a wider clash within the premises.
Six worshippers sustained injuries during the incident, with three said to be in critical condition and receiving medical treatment. Parts of the church building were also damaged.
Residents and church leaders have called on authorities and security agencies to investigate the attack, arrest those responsible, and ensure better protection for worship centres in the area.
Community sources say the area has witnessed similar disturbances in recent weeks, raising concerns about safety and public order.
