The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, is preparing to step down from his position in the cabinet of Bola Ahmed Tinubu as he gears up to contest the governorship election in Oyo State.
This decision follows a meeting between Adelabu and the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where the minister presented a detailed account of his performance in the power sector over the past two and a half years.
According to a statement released by his media aide, Adelabu delayed his resignation to focus on addressing pressing challenges in the electricity sector and to ensure continuity in ongoing reforms before leaving office.
Key issues highlighted include efforts to stabilise power generation amid gas supply challenges, ongoing pipeline repairs, and settling outstanding obligations to gas suppliers. He also sought and obtained the President’s approval for his planned resignation and political ambition.
During the meeting, Adelabu outlined achievements recorded under his leadership, including improvements in electricity generation, expansion of transmission capacity, and reforms aimed at enhancing efficiency across the sector.
He also presented major policy frameworks such as the National Integrated Electricity Policy and its Strategic Implementation Plan, designed to provide a long-term roadmap for sustainable energy development, improved access to electricity, and a more resilient power system.
In response, President Tinubu commended Adelabu’s contributions to the sector and endorsed his decision to pursue the Oyo governorship race.
Adelabu expressed appreciation for the President’s support and reaffirmed his commitment to national development, even as he transitions into the next phase of his political career.
