A fire outbreak reportedly caused by children playing with a cooking gas cylinder destroyed parts of a residential building in Omu-Aran, Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State.
Drivetvnews gathered that the incident occurred on Monday afternoon at a storey building located along Ibrahim Taiwo Road in Omu-Aran.
According to the Kwara State Fire Service, the building contained four three-bedroom flats, while two of the apartments were affected before firefighters arrived and brought the situation under control.
Spokesperson of the agency, Hassan Adekunle, said preliminary findings showed that the fire started after minors were allegedly playing with a gas cylinder while their parents were away from home.
He explained that the children reportedly raised an alarm after the fire spread beyond their control, attracting the attention of a passerby who alerted emergency responders.
Firefighters later succeeded in containing the fire and prevented it from spreading to the remaining parts of the building.
The agency confirmed that no life was lost and no injuries were recorded during the incident.
Reacting to the development, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Alabi Mohammed, advised parents and guardians to keep children away from gas cylinders, matches, and other flammable materials.
He also urged residents not to leave minors unattended around cooking appliances and encouraged members of the public to quickly report fire incidents to emergency agencies to reduce damage.
