Police in Enugu State have arrested a woman, Mrs. Ogechi John, over the alleged killing of her nine-year-old stepdaughter, Ogechi Amanda John, in the Emene area of Enugu metropolis.
The suspect, said to be from Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, was reportedly arrested on Monday following the incident, which allegedly occurred on Sunday afternoon at their residence in Nchatancha, Emene.
According to neighbours, the deceased child had allegedly suffered repeated maltreatment from her stepmother before the tragic incident.
Reacting to the development, the Enugu State Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Ngozi Enih, condemned the incident and vowed that justice would be served swiftly.
She stated that the administration of Governor Peter Mbah maintains zero tolerance for child abuse and homicide, adding that authorities immediately moved to ensure the suspect’s arrest after learning about the case.
The commissioner also assured residents that the government would push for a thorough and speedy investigation to ensure accountability.
