At least 16 travellers have lost their lives in a tragic road accident along the Lokoja-Okene Highway in Kogi State.
Drivetvnews gathered that the crash occurred on Friday morning at Aku village near Osara when a Toyota Hiace bus travelling from Jos, Plateau State, to Lagos reportedly lost control and plunged under a bridge.
According to the Kogi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Lawal Fagge, the vehicle was carrying 22 passengers, made up of 21 men and one woman.
Preliminary findings showed that excessive speed and driver fatigue caused the accident, leading the driver to lose control of the bus.
Fifteen male passengers and the only female occupant were confirmed dead at the scene.
Six other passengers sustained injuries and were rescued by FRSC officials who responded quickly after receiving a distress call.
The injured victims were taken to health facilities in Osara and Lokoja for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the Ankuri Mortuary in Lokoja.
The FRSC urged motorists to avoid speeding, obey traffic rules, and rest adequately during long journeys to reduce road accidents and prevent further loss of lives.
