The Chief Imam of Ogbomoso, Yunus Teliat Olushina Ayilara II, has urged the Nigerian government to impose the death penalty on kidnappers responsible for the abduction of schoolchildren, teachers and a principal in communities within Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
During his Jumat sermon delivered in Yoruba, the Islamic cleric strongly condemned the activities of bandits and kidnappers terrorising communities across the country. He insisted that individuals found guilty of kidnapping and killing innocent people should not be granted amnesty after investigation.
According to him, the Holy Qur’an does not support forgiveness for criminals involved in such violent acts. He argued that anyone confirmed to have participated in the abduction of pupils and teachers should face execution under the law.
Ayilara also expressed sadness over the killing of a Mathematics teacher during the attack, describing the incident as heartbreaking and cruel. He noted that the teacher had dedicated his life to educating children and contributing to the development of the community despite opportunities elsewhere.
The cleric questioned why the government would consider pardoning individuals responsible for such crimes, stressing that granting amnesty to violent criminals would encourage further insecurity.
His comments come amid rising concerns over kidnappings and attacks on schools and rural communities in different parts of Nigeria, with many residents demanding stricter action against bandits and kidnappers.
