A tragic incident has thrown the Umulogho community in Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State into mourning after a 21-year-old nursing student, Wendy Chinwendu Achumba, was allegedly raped and killed by two men.

The victim, a student of the College of Nursing Sciences, Umulogho, was reportedly attacked inside her off-campus apartment on the night of May 21, 2026.

According to reports, the prime suspect, Onyema Okonkwo, a local tyre technician, allegedly carried out the attack alongside an accomplice identified as Emmanuel Onyekachi, who has also reportedly been arrested by police authorities.

Investigators said the suspects took advantage of the fact that the victim was alone in her lodge after her roommates travelled out for clinical training.

Community sources alleged that Okonkwo had previously made advances toward the student, but she repeatedly turned him down. He was said to have later teamed up with his friend to force themselves on her.

During interrogation, Okonkwo allegedly confessed that both men entered the victim’s room and demanded sex from her, but she refused. He claimed the situation later turned violent as the student resisted and fought back.

The suspect reportedly admitted that the victim scratched his face during the struggle before the two men overpowered her.

Police sources said the suspects allegedly assaulted the student before attacking her with a weapon, leading to her death. They were also accused of stealing her mobile phone before fleeing the scene.

The shocking discovery of the victim’s body sparked outrage within the community, prompting local youths to launch a search operation. Okonkwo was later apprehended after residents reportedly noticed injury marks on his face believed to have been sustained during the struggle.

He was initially handed over to local police officers before being transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Owerri for further investigation and prosecution.

Authorities have also confirmed the arrest of the second suspect as investigations continue.
